I have been working with a client on a redesign of his site. One of the key goals is to capture the email, phone, or physical address of visitors. The usual method of doing this is to set up a newsletter sign up sheet.
But for this client, the business is lawn care service. So we set up an instant quote page where a user enters his address plus phone and/or email and we provide the cost of service. Even if the user does not sign up for the service we now have at least 1 point of marketing (address) and possibly 2 or 3 (phone and/or email). If the user puts in an address that is not in the database we still capture that information. The business owner then can visit the neighborhood and assess the property and send mail or add it to his phone marketing.
The process works via a series of forms that encourage the user to provide the info. The user is finally offered a choice to Start Service or a No Thanks option. If the user declines to start service, we ask for feedback which provides another opportunity to gauge user interest as well as capture more info. At key points we let the user know that we will not sell or misuse his information.
It is now up to the business owner to follow through when he receives the information.
Afterthought: I wonder if I could standardize this as an application that would fit multiple business types?
